Republican Jesus
Attending to memes that feature both presidential candidates in the 2016 presidential election and the subject of religion can help us to better understand the unique context of the 2016 election. This, by extension, can also help us see how members of the public responded to the way that republican candidates invoked their religious perspective.
To that end, the memes I have chosen to study concern the intersection of politics, religion, and contradiction of identity during the 2016 presidential election. In particular, I looked at memes that show contradictions between the candidates' religious beliefs and their political stances, particularly republican views.
There is a theme of memes called republican Jesus; they address the idea of "What Would Republican Jesus Do?" with irony, in that what Jesus would do is the opposite of what republican Jesus would do. In this, the impression is given that republican views do not align themselves with what most republicans claim their religion is.
